Graduates: Where are they now?!

Mirella Flores (she/her/hers) graduated from UMKC’s doctoral program in 2020. Mirella is a Post-Doctoral Fellow in Diversity and Multicultural Services at the University of Colorado, Boulder’s Counseling & Psychological Services. Her research interests focus on the influence of interpersonal violence and discrimination on the mental health of individuals with multiple, intersecting marginalized identities, with a particular emphasis on the experiences of transgender and sexual minority People of Color. Mirella utilizes qualitative and quantitative research methodologies and grounds her research in intersectionality theory. Regarding her clinical work, Mirella’s primary clinical interests include, but are not limited to, multicultural and social justice concerns, identity development (taking an intersectional lens), relational problems, trauma and recovery, and mood.

Sara Aslan (she/her/hers) graduated from UMKC’s doctoral program in 2018. Sara’s dissertation was entitled, “Latinx women’s experiences of disordered eating: Considering culturally relevant variables in the Objectification Theory framework.” She completed her pre-doctoral internship at the Colmery O’Neil VA Medical Center. Her areas of interest include trauma and eating disorders. She currently resides in Portland, OR, in which she works as a psychologist at the Portand VA Medical Center.

Michelle Farrell (they/them/theirs) graduated from UMKC’s counseling psychology program in 2018. Michelle’s dissertation was entitled, “Non-binary transgender individuals’ experiences of empowerment in counseling.” Michelle completed their pre-doctoral internship at the University of Utah Counseling Center. Michelle is currently a staff psychology at the University of Maryland’s Counseling Center. Michelle’s areas of interest include LGBTQIA+ related concerns, including identity development, resilience, empowerment, and intersectionality. Michelle aims to foster diversity and inclusion on college campuses.

Christopher M. Davids (he/him/his) graduated from UMKC’s counseling psychology program in 2015. Chris’s dissertation was entitled, “Sexual objectification and gender role conflict as predictors of drive for muscularity: A test and extension of objectification theory.” He completed his pre-doctoral internship at the University of Utah Counseling Center. Chris is an Associate Professor at Westminster College, in Salt Lake City, UT, whereby he also serves as Faculty Fellow for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
